“Clyde’s Corner”

I have been getting questions about the picture used at the top of my column, the clothespin picture. Jack Crowell isn't deceased yet; this is a pre-need monument. Jack owns the company that makes clothespins. This was taken in Middlesex, VT.

Now, let’s get to the first picture I took, as mentioned in my last column. In the Scippio Cemetery in Harlan, Indiana you'll find this monument. The story is this…

Archie A. Arnold was a plumber by trade, and a practical joker at heart. He was also an alcoholic who was dying from acute alcoholism and a failed liver. He was drunk, and backed his vehicle over two parking meters in Hixville, Ohio. He received a ticket, and asked the arresting officer, “Since I've paid for the parking meters, can I have them?” They told him they were of no value now and he might as well take them home.

He took them home, put new pipe stands on them, painted them black, and welded the coin slot so it could never be changed. He then changed his Will so that upon his death, one would be placed on each end of his monument, and they would read “EXPIRED”.

The Los Angeles Times newspaper printed four of my photos, which included the parking meter shot. They then called me and said, “We'll pay you $500 if we can use that photo every day for one year as an advertisement." I said, "Have at it!” They sent the check and their advertisement read:

“Is your Los Angeles Times Newspaper Subscription About To Expire?”

I have sold that photo to over 50 newspapers and magazines and carry an 8x10 of it with me; plus I also have it printed on a necktie that I wear when giving my slide presentations. Ed Defort, senior editor of American Cemetery Magazine, also has a necktie just like it and wears it to each cemetery or monument convention he attends.

This was my first photo, and as you see, it has been one of my favorites. See you next time with more stories and photos…
